A blood patch, also known as an epidural blood patch, is a procedure commonly used to address symptoms associated with a leak of cerebrospinal fluid, often following a spinal tap, epidural procedure, or accidental dural puncture. During the procedure, a small amount of the patient’s own blood is collected and carefully injected into the epidural space near the site of the fluid leak. The blood then forms a clot that helps seal the opening in the membrane surrounding the spinal cord.
By closing the leak, the blood patch helps restore normal cerebrospinal fluid pressure around the brain and spinal cord. Many patients experience significant improvement in symptoms within hours, although the response can vary from person to person. The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis and is considered a well-established option for managing persistent symptoms related to cerebrospinal fluid leakage.
