Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that can develop after an injury, surgery, fracture, or other trauma, although the original injury may sometimes seem minor. It most often affects an arm, leg, hand, or foot and can cause intense, ongoing pain that is greater than expected for the original injury. Other symptoms may include swelling, changes in skin color or temperature, sensitivity to touch, sweating changes, and stiffness or difficulty moving the affected area.
CRPS can vary significantly from person to person and may affect both physical function and quality of life. Early recognition and evaluation are important because symptoms can become more difficult to manage over time. Treatment is individualized and may involve a combination of approaches aimed at reducing pain, improving movement and function, and helping the affected limb return to normal use.
